Exploring the complexities of our emotional landscapes

Raissa Oliveira Da Silva’s art is not just an extension of her creativity—it’s a chronicle of resilience, healing, and human connection. Born in Brazil and raised in the United States, Raissa’s journey as an artist has been one of transformation, marked by her exploration of identity, emotion, and self-discovery.
Her early exposure to art came naturally, with childhood memories steeped in drawing and painting. Encouraged by her family and guided by inspiring mentors, Raissa’s talents found a platform when, at just 14 years old, she won Best in Show at her first art exhibition at Brookhaven Town Hall in New York. This early recognition became the foundation for a lifelong pursuit of artistic mastery.

Raissa’s formal education at Adelphi University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, and her time studying Renaissance techniques in Florence, Italy, refined her technical skills. But beyond formal training, her art grew from an inner dialogue—her paintings becoming vessels for processing emotions and connecting with others.
“I discovered my paintings carried hidden meanings, revealing stories of emotions I was shutting out,” Raissa shared. This realization transformed her art into a tool for self-discovery and a medium for exploring universal human experiences.

Her work, described as surrealism or magic realism, invites viewers into a world where realistic details blend seamlessly with elements that stretch the bounds of reality. With themes rooted in the complexities of the human experience, Raissa delves into emotions like pain, joy, love, and loss—creating pieces that resonate deeply with her audience.
Over the years, Raissa’s art has earned widespread recognition. Her pieces have been showcased at prestigious venues, including the National Arts Club, Monaco's International Gallery of Gemluc Art, and Art Expo NYC. 2024 proved especially fruitful, with Raissa participating in multiple exhibitions, including her collaboration with Ovono Agency. She is now gearing up for a solo exhibition at Greenpoint Gallery and another with Ovono Agency this March.
In her current collection, Raissa moves beyond individual portraits to focus on the expressive language of hands. “Hands transcend individual identity,” she explains. “They communicate movement, memory, and passion, allowing for a universal exploration of the human experience.” This shift mirrors her own journey—from healing past traumas to embracing newfound freedom and the pursuit of life’s joys. For those eager to experience her art, Raissa’s work is available for purchase on her website, www.artbyros.com. She also offers commission slots, inviting clients to collaborate and bring their unique visions to life.

Interview with Raissa When did you begin your journey as an artist, and where did it all start?
Art has always been a part of my life. My fondest childhood memories include me drawing for fun. I remember how impressed my family would be by my creations. I was always practicing. At 10 years old, my aunt, who is an artist, introduced me to painting. Once I reached high school, I was guided by amazing teachers to pursue a career in art. My first ever art show was at Brookhaven Town Hall New York where I received a first-place award for best in show. I was 14 years old.
What was your main source of inspiration to pursue a career in art?
When you find something that you're truly good at, and you deeply enjoy doing, it lights a fire in you that is hard to burn off. My journey has included not only a pursuit of mastery in art, but a longing to understand life and share what I learned with the world. Art has helped me confront my own emotions and understand more about who I am. It is such a powerful tool and a main inspiration of why I want to pursue a career in art.

Which artists do you collaborate with or draw inspiration from?
While I haven't had the opportunity for extensive collaborations yet, I highly value the exchange of knowledge. My artistic strengths lie in technical painting skills, color theory, and creative thinking. I actively engage with my artist community, participating in brainstorming sessions and sharing my knowledge whenever possible. We provide constructive critiques on each other's work, fostering an environment of continuous learning and growth. My artistic inspiration stems from a diverse range of artists, including Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, Norman Rockwell, Sandro Botticelli, Toulouse Lautrec, as well as contemporary artists like Sasha Gordon, Zhou Song, and Brent Estabrook.
Do you have a distinct style or theme in your work? If so, how would you describe it?
I see my artwork as surrealism or magic realism. My paintings initially draw viewers in with their realistic details, but then subtly introduce elements that challenge that perception. I focus on rich colors and close up details that push the bounds of reality. The central theme of my work explores the complexities of the human experience. I delve into how we experience and navigate a range of emotions – pain, joy, love, loss – and how we overcome challenges and strive for personal growth.
Where can people view or purchase your artwork?
My artwork is available for purchase on my website, www.artbyros.com, where you can also explore my current collection. I'm currently offering a limited number of commission slots. If a specific piece resonates with you, or if you have a unique vision in mind, let's collaborate to create something truly special. You can submit an inquiry for commissions through my website.

What are some of the most recent exhibitions or shows you’ve participated in?
Looking back on 2024, I participated in Art Expo NYC and showcased my work at several prominent galleries in the New York City area, focusing on spaces that support emerging artists. I've had the pleasure of exhibiting with Ovono Agency a number of times, culminating in a solo exhibition coming March 21st, 2025. I'm also thrilled to have another solo show later this year with Greenpoint Gallery, and I'm currently finalizing details for a third solo exhibition that I'm excited to announce soon.
What projects are you currently working on or have planned for the near future?
My previous collection focused on the profound experience of healing from trauma, bringing to the surface emotions that had long been buried. It hinted on how surpressed memories can shape an individual's behavior. I achieved this by focusing on highly detailed faces to tell the story of souls like you and me. My current work, however, shifts its focus. I'm now exploring the journey that follows healing – the pursuit of life, the embrace of newfound freedom.

To emphasize this shift, I've moved away from individual portraits and am now prioritizing the expressive language of hands. I wanted to transcend from any individual identity by prioritizing hands as a means of communication. Focusing on fluidity and movement allows exploration of identity, memory and passion in a more universal language. This has opened the door for a more profound and interconnected exploration of the human experience. How can people stay updated on your latest work and follow your journey?
