A Journey of Transformation in Abstract Art

Joshua Gutierrez, known artistically as “Josh G,”Joshua Gutierrez, known artistically as “Josh G,” has steadily carved his place in the art world, developing a unique approach that bridges the gap between fine art and street aesthetics. His journey, which began with a childhood passion for drawing characters, has evolved over years of experimentation and self-discovery, resulting in a refined style that he describes as urban abstract art. This style has grown and matured significantly over the past four years, reflecting his personal growth and evolving view of art.
Raised with a deep-rooted passion for visual storytelling, Josh G’s artistic trajectory took a more structured path after he pursued a fine arts degree. However, it wasn’t until recently that he truly unlocked his creative voice, drawing from the expressive, often gritty world of street art and blending it with fine art techniques. His work captures the raw energy and the complexities of urban life while retaining the polished techniques of traditional artistry—a duality that has become his signature.
For Josh G, inspiration flows from both iconic and contemporary figures. His work is heavily influenced by foundational artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring, all of whom pushed the boundaries of their mediums and championed themes of cultural reflection and social critique. Josh sees a kinship in their work with his own mission to bring raw emotion and cultural narrative to the forefront. He is equally inspired by the modern visions of artists like Menas, Flore, Daniel Arsham, and the fashion designer Philllllllthy. These contemporary creators embody the intersection of art, urban culture, and popular fashion—elements that resonate deeply with Josh's own themes. These influences manifest in his works through vibrant colors, layered textures, and a willingness to defy traditional forms.
His art is now showcased in a wide range of venues across the United States, from Washington, D.C., to Florida, Texas, New Jersey, and New York, extending his creative reach even further with upcoming exhibitions in California and overseas in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Each of these locations brings a new audience and new context to his work, allowing him to engage with diverse communities and add layers to his urban aesthetic. This extensive gallery presence is a testament to his dedication to art, capturing the attention of curators and collectors alike who resonate with his unique fusion of street and fine art.
Recently, Josh G has been busy with an array of exhibitions and festivals, taking his work to new heights and exposing it to broader audiences. One of the highlights of his career thus far was participating in the SEA HEAR NOW festival, where he showcased his work at the Danny Clinch Gallery to over 35,000 attendees daily. This exposure solidified his place as a compelling artist within the urban art landscape and introduced his work to an entirely new demographic of art lovers and festival-goers alike. His involvement in North2Shore in Asbury, New Jersey, along with several solo shows in Queens and group exhibitions across the tri-state area, continues to draw attention to his distinct style and storytelling ability.
In addition to gallery showings, Josh G has expanded his portfolio to include mural work and various commissioned projects. These projects allow him to bring his art into public spaces, making it accessible to a larger, more diverse audience. His murals transform urban landscapes, enhancing city spaces with his bold colors and dynamic forms while infusing them with messages that reflect both his personal experiences and the collective energy of urban life. Through these works, Josh’s art reaches beyond the traditional confines of galleries, embodying the core of urban abstract art—art that is not only seen but felt, lived, and shared in public spaces.
